How To Filter Service Accounts from User Profile Imports

Here is how to filter out service accounts during your User Profile Synchronization:
Assumptions

• Service accounts do not have the mail attribute in Active Directory set

Launch Central Administration, navigate to the Configure Synchronization Connections screen and select Edit Connection Filters:
(CA > Application Management > Manage Service Applications > User Profile Service Application > Configure Synchronization Connections)



On the Exclusion Filter for Users section, set to All apply, the Attribute to mail and the Operator to Is not present:



Click Add to load it into the filter list:



Click Ok on the Edit Connection Filters screen. Now, on your next full or incremental import, service accounts without mail will be filtered out – providing a nice clean profile import and people search results!
